Turkey shoot was originally a contest in which individuals would shoot turkeys that were tied down in a pen. The shooter needed to shoot from 25 to 35 yards. Back then, if the turkey died, the shooter would win it as a prize. The contest used to be quite popular all over America but it has changed its meaning over the time.

Nowadays, turkey shoot is a competition of shooting in which the winner gets a frozen turkey, or more, as a prize. The competition is still popular, especially in rural areas. The winner is decided according to which target had a shot closest to its center cross-mark.
